Traditional low-light night vision technology refers to the use of natural night skylight such as weak moonlight, starlight, atmospheric glow, and galaxy light as illumination light at night, and uses an image intensifier to amplify and convert the weak photons reflected back from ground objects into visible light images , to achieve night imaging.

With the continuous advancement of technology, latest low-light night vision technology uses computer software enhancement methods in addition to different photoelectric enhancement methods. Currently, low-light night vision technology can be divided into two categories based on the core devices used. One is low-light night vision technology based on image intensifiers, and the other is low-light night vision technology based on low-illumination solid-state sensors technology.

Traditional low-light night vision devices usually use direct viewing with the human eye and cannot save images for subsequent review and analysis. With the development of device and process technology, enhanced charge-coupled devices (ICCD) began to appear. By coupling an area array charge-coupled device (CCD) behind the fluorescent screen of the image intensifier, the luminous pattern on the fluorescent screen is converted into a digital image, thereby Perform image storage and subsequent processing. But usually, it is still monochromatic imaging, which has certain application limitations.

As sensor performance levels continue to improve, high-sensitivity, low-noise CCD and complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) solid-state sensors are beginning to be used in low-light night vision equipment. Since solid-state sensors can achieve color imaging, some people call it fifth-generation low-light night vision technology, which can achieve color imaging effects similar to daytime at night.

The biggest advantage of low-light night vision technology based on low-illumination solid-state sensors is that it can achieve color imaging. At the same time, it can be combined with computing software methods to further enhance the image, thus greatly improving nighttime imaging capabilities.
